The story of OOTG #4
It’s never just write a story or draw an illustration. It doesn’t matter how much you refine your craft. You have to get it out into the world.
I had been workshopping short fiction with the Austin Fictionists and finally had something to send out. Duotrope had pointed me to Out of the Gutter Magazine: the modern journal for pulp fiction and degenerate literature who was taking submissions for Issue 4 themed “Hard Times”. I sent in my short story “Rules” and was accepted by Matt Louis. The distribution was mail-order and a handful of bookstores. I offered to help which led to a lesson in how books get distributed, getting a UIC number, what determines their placement on a shelf, how to approach media, and finally having bookstore events.
